About Chuck Byron Youth Art Foundation

Our intentions are to reward and encourage youth, from ages K – 12th grade, who have a desire to create art in any medium. Whether they love painting or drawing, photography, or three dimensional arts, we connect them with established artists to learn hands-on art techniques, we take them fishing to learn more about the ocean and interpreting their experience to their art. We also hold art contests for the kids to have the opportunity to win art supplies and tools for their work. This is an enhancement program for kids who want to learn and grow aware of their surroundings.

We are an exempt 501 (c) 3 corporation.  We were founded in 2007 after the passing of the wildlife artist Chuck Byron.  Chuck appreciated all his opportunities to be a better artist and wanted kids that desire the same to have chances to grow in their talents. We are funded by public charities and hold annual fundraisers to offer the young artists more learning experiences and possibly one day offer scholarships to them for a career using their creative talent. Your consideration of us for donations in cash or prizes will help to continue our efforts for the kids.

Please browse here to see some of the past events and art projects we hold out of San Diego, California. Although you don’t have to live here, most events are in the southern California area. We do except art contest entries nationwide and send rewards that apply to your location.

Youth Artists learn the “art of fishing”

Twenty five youth artists went fishing on the Seawatch out of Seaforth Landing last week. With the collaborated funds of the Chuck Byron Youth Art program, the San Diego Rod & Reel Club, and the Friends of Rollo Fdn. sponsored the kids going out fishing on a half day trip. Most of the kids were participants in the 2010 Youth Marine Art Contest and this trip was particularly special due to having both artists, Matt Kotch and Greg Guterriez on board to talk about “the art of fishing”. These annual trips are a way to inspire the young artists in understanding our oceans and using their talents to recreate what they have seen and learned while out on the water. Friends of Rollo provided the tackle and a hotdog lunch for all, along with setting up the boat arrangements. The Rod & Reel Club and the Youth Art program both raised money this summer with their annual Big Fish and Fish On! tournaments. “With donations down for all of us this year, the best way to make sure we get kids out on the water was to combine our funds. This way we can take them on a couple trips until our next fund raisers in 2011”. Says, Lori Byron. Lori is the director for the Chuck Byron Youth Art program. She says there are many programs out there raising money to take kids fishing, “With donations being cut back from most all our sponsors we have found an affordable way to cover the cost of trips by sharing the cost.”

All three non-profit programs raise money annually for kids and if you would like to know more about them, how to get involved, or go fishing with us, they can be found on line. Or call Lori Byron at 619-301-3193.

Youth Artists Paint a Sea Life Mural

September 8, 2009 by

Twenty two young artists, ages 6 to16, spent Saturday, August 29th transforming the 150’ storefront of Catalina Offshore Products, a leading San Diego based seafood wholesale/retail market on Loveland Street in the Morena District, into a sea life filled mural of creatures large and small.  The collaborative effort was orchestrated by Lori Byron of the Chuck Byron Youth Art, Inc..

These young artists were so focused on their art, it took less than a day to complete the project. Parents were there with support, handing brushes, getting more paint and, at times adding a few strokes to their children’s works of art.   Little brothers and sisters pitched in with the paint on the lower parts of the wall and by 2:00 the mural was complete.

The project got its start when Tommy Gomes and David Rudie of Catalina Offshore Products mentioned to Lori Byron that they had a building in need of a facelift.  And, Lori went to work.

She called on kids that had previously submitted artwork to her FISH ON! ART CONTEST, and others who had expressed an interest in learning the art of mural painting.  She rounded up sponsors BEHR PAINT and HOME DEPOT to provide the paint and tools needed to complete the project.  Contractor CERVIZZI PAINTING sprayed a blue backdrop of water and Janet Fleming from BLAST OF COLORS.COM provided the mural expertise to bring the project together.  Members of the SAN DIEGO ROD & REEL CLUB helped stir and pour paint and were out in force to show their support for the foundation.

As he has done at many of San Diego’s kids fishing events, Tommy Gomes and the pro-staff of UNI BUTTER, cooked up wonderful fresh fish tacos and provided refreshment with the support of CATALINA OFFSHORE PRODUCTS, HANSEN’S SODA, and SPECIALTY PRODUCE.

The Chuck Byron Youth Art, Inc. makes this and other hands-on art projects happen free to the artists by raising funds at the annual FISH ON! ANGLER’S TOURNAMENT.  The sixth annual tournament will take place on Sept. 19, 2009.  The competition is open to private boaters and sportboat anglers. Kids 16 & under fish free on the sportboats with each paid adult. An awards banquet and auction will be held on Sunday September 20th.  A component of the live auction at the banquet includes original art created by young artists.  Raffle and auction items include fishing tackle, fishing trips and resort vacations provided by industry sponsors.  Money raised helps support kids that have a passion for art and want to learn more through our world of fishing the oceans.

The public is welcome to join the tournament and/or the banquet. The banquet and live auction will take place at us the BALI HAI RESTAURANT on beautiful Shelter Island from noon- 4:00. Tickets for the banquet are available at the door for $20.

For more information on future art programs planned for the kids, to fish the tournament or attend the banquet and support these young artists, go to WWW.CHUCKBYRON.COM or call 619-301-3193.
